How do you curl hair with a flat iron (or straightenoing iron-same thing, right?)?

Im getting married in about 2 months. I am going crazy with all of the stuff to do. But i need a good hairstyle for the honeymoon and stuff.i have like wavyish hair, and sometimes i wanna make it curly. my friend told me if i straighten it first, then i can curl it or make it into beautiful big waves (my natural waves are just messy) with the straightening or flat iron.
